Abbreviation
in Research Writing
In
research many things may be repeated
and such repetitions are put in shortened
for economy of space and time. To make
short of familiar terms is to abbreviate
them. Abbreviation are used regularly
in the list of works cited and in tables
but rarely in the text of a research
paper (except with in parenthesis).
When abbreviating you may abbreviate
the names of days, months, and others
measurements of time in appropriate
context. Fri, Feb, am, AD etc. are the
abbreviations of time designations.
In
the same way you may abbreviate the
names of states and countries, terms
and reference words common in scholarship,
publishers name and the titles of well
known literary and religious works.
Names
of the states, countries, provinces
and territories are geographical names
and these are the few examples of geographical
abbreviation, AB for Albania, DC for
District of Columbia and Gt. Brit for
Great Britain etc.The common scholarly
abbreviation is one in which, the term
and reference words common in scholarship
are abbreviated and the abbreviation
is generally used in humanities re-
search studies in English. For Example
trans for translation acad for academy
and govt for government etc.
Abbreviation
of publisher’s name in work cited
list of re-search writing uses surname
of person and the first name is dropped
out for example, Abram for Harry N.
Abrams. But, if the publisher is institution
or organization, it is abbreviated as
follow: GPO for Government Print Office,
St. Martins for St. Martin’s Press
Ins
Title of well
known literature and religious works
is considered best to abbreviate in
parenthesis immediately after the first
use of the full time in text. For example
– In All’s well That Ends
Well ( AWW), and when the same title
repeats, use of abbreviation AWW will
be enough. Likewise, Exod for Exodus,
Beo for Beowulf are the abbreviations
of religious works.

an idea. But in initial phase we should
not think about other purposes rather
we have to write just to record memories
before they lost. Read
