Writing
to Convey Information
When
we write to inform we must pay special
attention to the interests and abilities
of the audience to offer the quality
and quantity of information appropriate
to the readers. When we write for general
readers we should not expect them to
understand specialized vocabulary and
advanced concepts. Generally we must
think about how much and what kind of
information we need to give the audience.
In general there are two points to bear
in mind while writing to inform.
-The
writer should give the information about
what the audiences are unknown. (Idea)
- The language must be used according
to the capacity of the audience. (Language)
Writing to inform
always does not need to have a thesis.
Business reports for instance are frequently
simple narrations of what has happened.
But informative writing can benefit
from having a thesis. When we do have
a thesis, usually we will be wise to
put it up front and indicate it clearly
for the readers.
Busy
people appreciate having signals from
the author that will alert them to the
most important information and give
them the opportunity to skim the rest.
The first part of the writing should
include introduction. After stating
the introduction we need to include
background information that gives the
readers a context in to which to fit
the rest of the report. But a good strategy
is to save the most impressive or most
starting facts until just before the
conclusion. It is also possible to present
the most important information first-
through this method can easily lead
to an anticlimax.
Another
important point is that while presenting
information it must be in neutral, precise
and with objective language. But too
much scientific and informative writing
sounds as if a machine produced it.
At last the writer must make clear that
the essay is finished. So he or she
should not stop just. For that purpose
they can write a conclusion in the form
of summary. In other cases, they can
return to the point that is made in
the introduction or by offering a quotation
also one can end.
The
most important thing that a writer needs
in informative writing is, it must include
information and it also should communicate
with the others (readers).
Writing
to Record a Memory
We
can record our memories in the form
of a journal or diary. A journal is
written for ourselves that allows us
recording in detail whatever we have
in mind. In journal we can write whatever
we want without worrying about grammar
style or whatever. Journal can be used
for other motive as well like in writing
to discover or in writing to explore
an idea. But in initial phase we should
not think about other purposes rather
we have to write just to record memories
before they lost. Read
