Writing
to Evaluate Something
To
write something with the purpose of
evaluation is generally known a writing
to evaluate. Evaluation means thinking
critically and trying to make intelligent
choice. It can also involve trying to
influence others to accept our judgments.
Evaluating is to determine the nature
of anything that is being judged. When
writing an evaluation, we need to assure
our reader that we have the credentials
(qualities) to make judgment about the
subject we address. If the readers trust
us then they are likely to follow our
(Writing) advice. However, evaluation
is absolutely personal judgment.
How
to plan an Evaluative Essay
Before planning,
we should have the subject matter of
evaluation. Then we have to think about
our experience and knowledge about the
thing that we are going to evaluate.
So we should examine what kind of information
we have about it. If we lack it, we
should search the information through
research. Information is essential because
we must support our evaluation with
specific evidence.
A good way to plan an evaluation is
to think about our subject analytically.
Here is the four step process for using
analysis to plan an evaluation:
1)
We can divide our subject by identifying
its major components. For example if
we are evaluating a restaurant, we may
address atmosphere, service, food and
prices. If we are evaluating an essay
we can evaluate it according to content,
style and organization.
2) Now, we should consider
our information that we have or can
obtain about the subject to discuss
the divisions we have identified.
3) In this step, we
need to ask ourselves about most important
part of the division to emphasize if
further. We have to be caution about
ourselves that we might have over looked
any important part of the essay that
the readers would probably want information
about. Unless we are writing for our
own benefit, we must eliminate any division
that seems to be of personal interest
unlikely to concern other readers.
4) At last we have
to decide whether to discuss all important
divisions or to focus only up on one.
If we focus only in one, we should have
enough information about it, and be
sure about the focus up on something
important. For example, in an evaluation
of a restaurant, we can limit our discussion
to its food.
While planning an evaluation, we should
also consider how strongly we feel about
our subject. If we are enthusiastic
about the subject then our writing becomes
a lively one.
Defining
Criteria
Evaluations
are based on standards that most people
agree with. Defined criteria should
be appropriate for audience too. We
should set criteria, which also should
be agreed by our readers or at least
will not reject. We should examine our
criteria and ask ourselves if they justify
the evaluation we plan to make. We should
also consider the kind of evidence that
will persuade our audience to accept
our evaluation. We always must be sure
of providing enough information for
readers unfamiliar with the subject
we are evaluating.
Organizing
the Essay
The writers
should state their judgment clearly
and place it prominently. Generally,
we have to include evidences to support
the evaluation. Similarly it is wise
to show the readers that we have considered
both the strength and weaknesses of
the subject.
Following points are to be followed
while organizing our essay
-Present the subject (This discussion
includes any background information,
description, acknowledgement of weakness
and so forth)
- State the criteria (If the criteria
are controversial, the writer should
justify them)
- Make judgment (stating it as clearly
and emphatically possible is the must)
- Give reasons (It is necessary to present
good evidence for each case)
- Refute opposing evaluation (Thoughtful
consideration to opposing view is necessary
to be persuasive)
- Stating your conclusion (Writing may
restate or summarize the judgment at
last too.)
Writing
to Record a Memory
We
can record our memories in the form
of a journal or diary. A journal is
written for ourselves that allows us
recording in detail whatever we have
in mind. In journal we can write whatever
we want without worrying about grammar
style or whatever. Journal can be used
for other motive as well like in writing
to discover or in writing to explore
an idea. But in initial phase we should
not think about other purposes rather
we have to write just to record memories
before they lost. Read

previously unknown or little known.

about an area of studies that is unknown
or previously little known to the readers.
