Writing to Persuade Others

When we want to argue for specific change we need persuasion. There are dozens of situations in which persuasion is fundamental to everyday life. For instance when we apply for a job, propose a marriage, try to borrow money, we use persuasion in an attempt to get someone to do something we want. So persuasion is necessary for changing others mind. And we need to persuade others only when different opinions exist. Persuasion is unnecessary when widespread agreement already exists.

Classical rhetoric recognized that persuasion was accomplished through three means:
Ethos- the credibility of the writer/ speaker
Logos- the logic of the argument
Pathos- the skill with which appropriate feelings are inspired

These threefold approach to persuasion prevailed in the west for almost two thousand years but its practitioners varied in what they emphasized and what strategies they recommended. Aristotle for example, believed that ethos is the most important aspect of persuasion and that we make ourselves believable by how we present ourselves in what we say.

But Aristotle defined ethos as something created with in the work from which it would be follow that a bad person could seem to be credible because of his skill in arguing. Other rhetoricians have argued that ethos cannot be created artificially and that only good people can write arguments that are truly persuasive. People like Cicero emphasizes on the role of pathos.

So there is no universal agreement about how to persuade others. Different opinions prevailed from the classical period on ward. There has been and there is still no universal agreement about how to persuade others at this point we can offer some basic principle of persuasion or persuasive writing.

The writing can give focus on one of the three elements of ethos pathos and logos. As a general rule, argument depending up on only one of these methods probably won’t be as persuasive as an argument using more than one. So the writers should try to include all of them (ethos, pathos and logos). The most persuasive argument are those that still make sensed after we have thought about them for a while. It suggests that persuasion or persuasive writing should appeal to the mind as well as to the heart.

Thus writing to persuade becomes a means of over coming division and drawing people together. As its crudest level persuasion may draw people together superficially through means that are manipulative rather than honest. A successful advertising campaign can convince thousands of people to buy a product they really don’t need.

Summing up, persuasion should be conducted honorably. We should never over look important evidence that operates against our conclusion. And we should never exaggerate or misrepresent views that differ from our own. The necessary point is to show being fair minded but we must make our position clear and the writing must be well supported. There are the features of persuasive writings.
